Media Assessment 1: Learner Response

1) Type up your feedback in full.

WWW: This is a superb start in media and a really impressive assessment - well done!

EBI - It's brilliant to be focusing on grade 8/9 skills at this early stage in the course. Look for blog extension tasks and let's aim to add the depth, detail and sophistication to our paragraphs to open up the very top level.

Total - 24/30 / Grade - 7

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Write down the mark you achieved for each question:

Q1: 1

Q2: 1

Q3: 9

Q4: 2

Q5: 5

Q6: 6

3) Identify one of your stronger questions. Why did you do better on this question? Use the mark scheme to help you with this.

I think I did the best on Question 5 ("How are camera shots and mise-en-scene used to create an effect on the audience in the Water Aid advert?") because I was able to correctly identify the camera shot as a medium close up and used the idea of hair to demonstrate knowledge of mise-en-scene.

4) Identify one of your weaker questions. Why did you score lower on this particular question? Use the mark scheme to help you with this.

I think I did the weakest on Question 6 ("Why might charities use pictures of children in their advertising?"). After proofreading, both paragraphs seem to be arguing the same point. I should be mentioning the idea that consumers may own children themselves or recognise the stereotype.

5) Finally, write a new, detailed paragraph for Question 3 - the unseen text 12 mark question. Use the mark scheme to identify anticipated content you can add to your response and make sure you refer to the text and write in detail.

One way connotations are created tocommunicate meanings is through her red dress, which is low-cut and revealing. This creates a seductive effect when used in combination with the colour red itself, which has connotations of romance and sex appeal. The dress also appears luxury or designer label, connoting that the perfume is expensive, high-end and classy.

Furthermore, the slogan 'catch the fever' links to the idea of being 'hot', in the sense of attractiveness, which is created by the fragrance, or the popularity/virality of the product itself. 'The first fragrance by Beyonce' entices fans of the artist and creates excitement for a new announcement from her.

Another way is through the central image of Beyonce, who makes direct eye contact with the consumer and assumes a confident position. This connotes a feeling of power and confidence gained from the perfume. She dominates most of the advert, which could be alluring or provocative to the audience.
